Transdermal photosensitizers, such as 5-ALA, are being used for treating skin cancer, a disease typically suited for transdermal therapies.
However, their skin penetration is often poor. For instance, before activating the therapeutic effect of 5-ALA, the patient has to wait for 3 hr to ensure penetration of the drug through the skin. As demonstrated in the above Figure, Dermaportation can dramatically increase the rate and amount of skin penetration.

5-AMINOLEVULINIC ACID (5-ALA)
- Molecular Formula: C5H9O5
- Molecular Weight: 131.13
- 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a hydrophilic polar molecule. Two carbonyl groups provide the charged characteristic. 5-ALA is traditionally used in the form of ester derivatives which are necessary to increase the lipophilicity of the drug. The Dermaportation figures were achieved without the use of any penetration enhancers.
